Top Biotech Companies to Work For in 2026, According to AI

The top biotech companies to work for in the United States, according to AI, are Amgen, Vertex and Roche. These are the employers ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity name most often when job seekers ask which biotech companies are the best places to work. Moderna, Gilead Sciences, Biogen, Regeneron, Illumina, AbbVie, Alnylam and Pfizer complete the top 10.
This list is different from the award lists you may have seen. It does not rank employers on a survey of their own staff. It ranks them on how often AI recommends them to candidates, because that is now where many job searches start. In a PerceptionX survey of 306 active job seekers across seven countries, 89% of AI-using job seekers used ChatGPT, and 72% used AI before deciding whether to apply.

How this list was made
The ranking comes from the PerceptionX Employer Visibility Index, which tracks how AI assistants answer the questions candidates ask about employers. For this list we used the Biotechnology category for the United States.
- The questions: candidate-style prompts asking which biotech companies are the best places to work, run on ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity.
- The Visibility score: the share of those AI answers that named the company, averaged across the three models, on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 87.2 means the company was named in 87% of answers on average.
- The scope: 47 companies in the Biotechnology category. Companies with equal scores share a position.
- The date: data refreshed in October 2026. AI answers change, so treat this as a snapshot, and check the profiles for the latest score.
The Visibility score measures how often AI recommends an employer, not pay, benefits or working conditions. A high score means candidates hear the name; it is still worth checking reviews and speaking to employees about the role you want.

What the list tells us about biotech employers in AI answers
Large independent biotechs lead
Amgen, Vertex and Roche all score close to 80 or above. AI answers about biotech careers start with large, established companies rather than startups.
Boston and California dominate
Most of the top 10 are based in the Boston area or California. For candidates, that reflects where the visible biotech employers are concentrated.
The line with pharma is blurred
Roche, AbbVie and Pfizer appear in both the biotech and pharmaceutical rankings. AI does not draw a hard line between the two when candidates ask where to work.
Beyond the top 10
The full ranking of 47 companies, with a profile for each, is in the Biotechnology ranking of the Employer Visibility Index.
What candidates look for in a biotech employer
Whatever the list says, the right employer depends on the role. These are the factors candidates ask about most.
- Science and pipeline: the strength of the research pipeline and the chance to work on new medicines.
- Pay and equity: salary, bonus and, at smaller companies, stock awards.
- Stability: funding, pipeline risk and the history of layoffs, which matter more in biotech than many industries.
- Learning: mentoring, scientific training and support for publishing and conferences.
- Location: whether roles are based in a major hub such as Boston or the San Francisco Bay Area.
In our candidate research, the topics people asked AI about most when researching employers were compensation (53%), career opportunities (52%) and the interview experience (51%). Pay, growth and how the hiring process works decide who applies.
How to choose the right biotech employer for you
- Start with the role, not the brand. Research scientists, clinical development, manufacturing and commercial teams have different best employers. Ask AI about your specific role and city.
- Compare several sources. Use AI to build a shortlist, then check employee reviews, workplace surveys and the employer's own careers site.
- Check the details AI leaves out. Team structure, schedules, how new hires are supported and how pay is reviewed rarely appear in AI answers. Ask about them in the interview.
- Talk to employees. Current employees can tell you what daily work is really like in a specific team or location.
What biotech employers can learn from the ranking
- AI visibility is concentrated. A small number of employers take most of the mentions. If you are not in that group, many candidates asking broad questions will never hear your name.
- Reputation forms in third-party sources. AI answers draw on review sites, rankings, news and professional networks, not just careers pages. Our guide to improving your employer brand in ChatGPT explains which sources matter.
- Visibility differs by role and market. An employer can be named often for one job family and rarely for another, or strongly in one state and not another. Measure the questions your candidates actually ask.
PerceptionX is the only employer reputation platform built for how candidates now research employers. It shows what ChatGPT, Google and other AI assistants tell job seekers about working for a company: whether they recommend it, what they say about it and which websites those answers come from, in every market and for every type of role. The Visibility score on this list shows one part of that: how often AI names a company when candidates ask where to work. Our scores are independent: they come from what AI actually says, not from what employers tell us.
How this list is made: scores come from the answers AI assistants give candidates, measured the same way for every company.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best biotech company to work for?
According to AI, Amgen is the biotech company named most often when candidates ask which biotech companies are the best places to work in the United States, followed by Vertex and Roche.
What are the top 5 biotech companies to work for?
In the PerceptionX Employer Visibility Index for the US, the top five are Amgen, Vertex, Roche, Moderna and Gilead Sciences.
Is it better to work for a biotech or a pharmaceutical company?
AI does not separate the two sharply: Roche, AbbVie and Pfizer appear in both rankings. The better fit depends on whether you want research-led roles at a focused biotech or the scale of a large pharmaceutical company.
How is this list different from other best places to work lists?
Most lists rank employers on employee surveys or applications. This list ranks them on how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity recommend them when candidates ask where to work.
Does a high Visibility score mean a company is a better employer?
Not on its own. The score shows how often AI recommends an employer to candidates. Pay, benefits, working conditions and fit with your role still need checking through reviews, conversations with employees and the interview process.
How often is the ranking updated?
The Visibility Index is refreshed regularly. This list uses October 2026 data; each company profile shows its latest score.
