The top retail companies to work for in the United States, according to AI, are Target, Costco and The Home Depot. These are the employers ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity name most often when job seekers ask which retail companies are the best places to work. Walmart, Best Buy, Trader Joe's, Nordstrom, Starbucks, REI and Lowe's complete the top 10.

This list is different from the award lists you may have seen. It does not rank employers on a survey of their own staff. It ranks them on how often AI recommends them to candidates, because that is now where many job searches start. In a PerceptionX survey of 306 active job seekers across seven countries, 89% of AI-using job seekers used ChatGPT, and 72% used AI before deciding whether to apply.

How this list was made

The ranking comes from the PerceptionX Employer Visibility Index, which tracks how AI assistants answer the questions candidates ask about employers. For this list we used the Retail category for the United States.

  • The questions: candidate-style prompts asking which retail companies are the best places to work, run on ChatGPT, Google's AI and Perplexity.
  • The Visibility score: the share of those AI answers that named the company, averaged across the three models, on a scale of 0 to 100. A score of 76.9 means the company was named in 77% of answers on average.
  • The scope: 66 companies in the Retail category. Companies with equal scores share a position.
  • The date: data refreshed in October 2026. AI answers change, so treat this as a snapshot, and check the profiles for the latest score.

The Visibility score measures how often AI recommends an employer, not pay, benefits or working conditions. A high score means candidates hear the name; it is still worth checking reviews and speaking to employees about the role you want.

What the list tells us about retail employers in AI answers

Target and Costco lead

Target scores 76.9 and Costco 71.8. Every other retailer scores below 55. When candidates ask AI where to work in retail, these two employers come up first.

Reputation for treating staff well matters

Several of the top 10, including Costco, Trader Joe's and REI, are known for how they treat frontline employees. AI picks up on that reputation from reviews, news and rankings.

Big-box scale and specialist culture both win

The list mixes the largest retailers, such as Walmart and The Home Depot, with specialists such as Nordstrom and REI. Size helps visibility, but a distinctive culture can do the same job.

Beyond the top 10

Just outside the top 10, AI answers also regularly name CVS Health and Walgreens. The full ranking of 66 companies, with a profile for each, is in the Retail ranking of the Employer Visibility Index.

What candidates look for in a retail employer

Whatever the list says, the right employer depends on the role. These are the factors candidates ask about most.

  • Pay and scheduling: hourly rates, predictable schedules, overtime and how much notice staff get of shifts.
  • Benefits for part-time staff: whether health coverage, retirement plans and paid time off extend to part-time employees.
  • Employee discounts and perks: store discounts, which matter more in retail than in most industries.
  • Progression: clear routes from store roles to supervisor, store manager and corporate jobs.
  • Education support: tuition assistance and training programs.

In our candidate research, the topics people asked AI about most when researching employers were compensation (53%), career opportunities (52%) and the interview experience (51%). Pay, growth and how the hiring process works decide who applies.

How to choose the right retail employer for you

  1. Start with the role, not the brand. Store associates, store managers, supply chain staff and corporate teams have different best employers. Ask AI about your specific role and location.
  2. Compare several sources. Use AI to build a shortlist, then check employee reviews, workplace surveys and the employer's own careers site.
  3. Check the details AI leaves out. Team structure, schedules, how new hires are supported and how pay is reviewed rarely appear in AI answers. Ask about them in the interview.
  4. Talk to employees. Current employees can tell you what daily work is really like in a specific team or location.

What retail employers can learn from the ranking

  • AI visibility is concentrated. A small number of employers take most of the mentions. If you are not in that group, many candidates asking broad questions will never hear your name.
  • Reputation forms in third-party sources. AI answers draw on review sites, rankings, news and professional networks, not just careers pages. Our guide to improving your employer brand in ChatGPT explains which sources matter.
  • Visibility differs by role and market. An employer can be named often for one job family and rarely for another, or strongly in one state and not another. Measure the questions your candidates actually ask.

PerceptionX is the only employer reputation platform built for how candidates now research employers. It shows what ChatGPT, Google and other AI assistants tell job seekers about working for a company: whether they recommend it, what they say about it and which websites those answers come from, in every market and for every type of role. The Visibility score on this list shows one part of that: how often AI names a company when candidates ask where to work. Our scores are independent: they come from what AI actually says, not from what employers tell us.

How this list is made: scores come from the answers AI assistants give candidates, measured the same way for every company.
